ANTARCTIC ICEBERG

                        Antarctic Iceberg

A big iceberg has broken away from the Antarctic, close to the UK research station Halley.

  • Surface instrument on the Burnt Ice Shelf confirmed the split early on Friday.
  • There is currently no-one in the base, so there is no risk to human life.
  • The British Antarctic Survey has been operating Halley in a reduced role since 2017 because of the imminent prospect of a calving.
  • The berg has been measured to cover 1,270sqkm- nearly 490square miles. Halley is positioned just over 20km from the line of rupture.

NEW BERG

  • 98% of Antarctica is covered with snow, which is called sheet. The average thickness of ice sheet is 2-5km, there are no coastal plains on the continent.
  • Here only 2% share becomes show free in summer.
  • It is known as a "dynamic" or "active continent" because the size of Antarctic changes with weather.
  • "Vida" is a salt water lake in Antarctic which is 19m. It is covered with thick snow, its salinity is equal to Dead sea.
  • Mount vinson Massif is the highest peak in Antarctic, Mount Erebus is the only active volcano in Antarctica.
  • Here, there is no sunrise from 22 March to 23 September and it does not sunset here between 24 September to 21 March
  • A species of fish named "Krill" is found here in plenty, they live in group and their groups are called "Shawls"
  • Penguins are only found in Antarctic region.
  • There was no information of Antarctic until before 1820. It is said that for the first time in 1821 or 1822, there was a human.
